Taxicab fares are calculated in numerous ways. In some situations, a taxi driver could agree on a fixed price to travel from one place to another. Sometimes a driver could negotiate a fee with their passenger.
More often though, taxi fares use a more complicated method for calculation. Fares are charged on usage, time, and miles travelled. Immediately upon entering a taxi, a passenger will be charged for its use. This amount does vary, from a couple of dollars to higher within more congested areas.

Time is calculated because not every taxi takes the same time to get to its destination. Heavy traffic could be a major factor also. So there could even be a fee per minute. Generally, fares charge for minutes and distance travelled. But, if the ride takes longer, charges per minute will be reassessed. And if the ride is a short distance, you should expect to pay the usage fee and the mileage charge, but not a time fee.
In heavy traffic, if you only want to travel a few blocks, it could be more cost-effective to walk or even take a bus. But, if you are willing to pay for a local taxi service, this is also a viable option.
